Really Good Music Company

Music Business major? Schools like Berklee?

I’ve been thinking about going into a music career. I really want to work for a record company because I really want to work with bands. I have a few questions though:

If you want to go to a school like Berklee and major in Music Business, do you have to know how to play an instrument? I figure you don’t really have to, but I was just wondering. I do play the sax if it is required.

Are jobs in the music business and recording available? I don’t want to major in something that won’t be available when I graduate.

Is Music Business even the right major if you want to work for a record company and record bands?

Any other good schools that have music business majors, or a really good music company besides Berklee?

If you want to record bands, as in working in the control room, then what you want is Music Production/ Engineering, not Music Business. Business would be working on the legal side of things- drawing up contracts for bands, representing either bands and/or labels in legal matters, and possibly doing promotion/booking/recruitment. Music Production/ Engineering is the technical side- learning about sound and equipment and being involved in the actual recording process.

You do need to play an instrument to go to Berklee. The central part of your application is your audition, where you play a prepared piece, improvisation, sightreading, and call & response on your principal instrument (in your case, sax). Even if you are going into a non-performance related field this is required because once at the school anyone can elect to switch to a performance major.

Tchaikovsky – Swan Lake (Matthew Bourne)

$29.96

Swan Lake became an unexpected popular hit when radical choreographer Matthew Bourne took Tchaikovsky’s traditional ballet by the scruff of the neck and reworked it with a myriad of modern influences and themes to astonishing effect. Seldom have the dark psychological riptides at the heart of so many classical ballets been so brilliantly exposed. The Prince (Scott Ambler) is a wretched and diss…

The found-footage horror genre requires an unusual amount of give and take between filmmakers and their audience, with receptive viewers using their imagination to fill in the blanks that teasingly lie just beyond the camera’s narrow viewfinder. Apollo 18 boasts a novel setting and a nicely conspiratorial vibe, but suffers by its tendency to reveal too much too soon. Told via a combination of surv…
